Cambridge Speak

Cambridge Speak is part of the UK Speak Network of Christian students and young people, which exists:

"To transform situations of injustice through linking people together to use their voice and pray for change. Through bringing change to situations of injustice we want to share our faith in an all loving all powerful creator God."

See www.speak.org.uk for more information on the Speak Network. Cambridge Speak organises meetings for people to learn about, discuss and pray on issues of global injustice.

These have included:

Our current focus is on corporate responsibility and to this end is a member of the CORE coalition.

Cambridge Speak works with other groups in Cambridge to campaign on issues such as the above. We are also part of Christians in Unity in Cambridge (CUC).

Forthcoming events

Wednesdays

CAFE CAMPAIGNING - as always, you are warmly invited to have lunch, chat and action this Wednesday lunchtime, @ Fare Shares Cafe. This week we'll be looking at climate change and how much of UK aid is used to fund oil and gas projects rather than renewables in developing countries - this means we'll have plenty to say to Minister Hilary Benn...

Thursday 22nd February

DFID HILARY BENN CU Labour Party invites us to a meeting with Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for International Development, 5.00pm - 6.30pm at Alex Wood Hall, Norfolk Street (from the Mill Road/police station corner of Parker's Piece: go across traffic lights to East Road, and Norfolk St is the next road on the right). This will be a great opportunity to ask Hilary Benn any questions on international development or any other aspect of government policy.

Monday 5th March

BIG DRESS CHURCHES CELEBRATION Eden Baptist Church, 8pm. This is going to be a fantastic chance to celebrate what the Big Dress achieved both in Cambridge and in changing UK law to make companies more accountable. If you weren't here last year, and want to know what this BIG DRESS is - this is the event for you! Or if you were there and have stories to tell - come and share them!

Sunday 4th March

STOP THE TRAFFIK Launch event - 7.30pm, Emmanuel URC. Invite all your friends on Facebook or otherwise - this is going to be amazing! We all know people shouldn't be bouight and sold, and yet millions of people are trafficked into slavery every year (even in the UK!). Come and hear a presentation from STOP THE TRAFFIK, followed by music and a chance to take action.

Speak Animal Rights campaigners

You may have read in the press about a group of animal rights campaigners with the same name Speak. We are in no way connected or affiliated to this group.

Pray and Post cards

A few times a year, SPEAK produces Pray and Post cards. These generally explain a bit about an aspect of a campaign, with points for prayer, and a tear-off section that you can send to Tony Blair / a minister / your MP. If you think this sounds like a great idea then get in touch with us and we'll make sure you receive one (or more on request) when they come out.
