Interested in writing for the theatre?

The Marlowe presents ScriptLab, a series of readings and workshops of plays written by students and led by professional writers and directors.

If you've written - or are writing - a piece of drama, don't miss this opportunity to workshop it with professional theatre practitioners.

ScriptLab is an initiative by The Marlowe to promote and encourage new writing for the theatre by creating a context in which work can be developed with the help of professional directors and playwrights. The work presented will be work-in-progress.

ScriptLab develops and presents new work by students - and creates a focus for those interested in all aspects of new writing for the theatre. The format is a day's workshop/rehearsal of a work-in-progress (with the writer, actors and a professional director) followed by a free presentation in the evening. There will then be an opportunity to give the writer feedback, to meet professional directors and playwrights, and discuss the process of developing, rehearsing and staging new plays.

The broad aims are to:

  • bring together writers and those interested in new writing for the stage in a regular fortnightly session, creating a 'community' of writers;
  • assist and support the writer in the stages of handing the script over to a director and actors (the workshop) and having the initial response of an audience (the reading);
  • open the session up to those interested in writing in general, creating an environment receptive to it, and to form a group pursuing the development of the script without the necessity of a final, full production;
  • bring in outside expertise to help with this process and to make this expertise open to all during the evening discussion;
