10 February :: Italian Film Night
La Notte Prima degli Esami 7.30 pm. Ramsden room St Catharine's College. free members/ £2 non members
Plot summary: The film is set in an Italian high school in the late 80s. It
is the summer of 1989 and Luca (Nicolas Vaporidis) and his mates are about
to leave high school, as long as they pass their exams! Fully expecting
never having to put up with his horrid literature teacher, Antonio
Martinelli, again, Luca decides to tell him exactly what he thinks of him.
But Professor Martinelli informs Luca that, owing to a colleague's illness,
he will now be in charge of the exams. Oh dear... Luca's social life isn't
much better, although his friends are what matters to him. One night, at a
party, Luca meets the girl of his dreams, Claudia (Cristiana Capotondi),
but before he can get her phone number, she is whisked away by her thuggish
boyfriend Cesare (Marco Aceti). But Luca and Claudia will meet again, in a
totally unpredictable way.

16 February :: Festa di Carnevale
SATURDAY 16TH FEBRUARY : Cafe Blue at the Graduate Union, 9pm.
for location see: http://www.gradunion.cam.ac.uk/gradunion/#contact
Apologies for the change in date, this event will now take place on
Saturday 16th February at 9pm, instead of the 8th February as previously
advertised.
The Time of Carnevale is already upon us and we will be celebrating with a
traditional 'Carnevale' masquerade Festa on 8th February. Come dressed in
your finest mask, and get ready to party the night away like a Venetian
reveler!
For those of you who aren't familiar with the tradition, the word
'Carnevale' comes from the Latin for "Farewell, meat!". As Lent (which
begins on Ash Wednesday) obliged people to fast, during the period up to
Ash Wednesday all meat, butter and eggs had to be used up. This religious
formality became the excuse for a party that echoed pagan festivities, a
period when licentiousness and wantonry were celebrated - a deliberate
upturning of the usual social order. Christianity licensed a comparable
period of celebration from Twelfth Night until the midnight of Shrove
Tuesday, traditionally known as 'Carnevale'!
Our celebration will cost £2 for members and £3 non-members and typical Carnevale-style dolci will be included in the price. As always we welcome Italiani and Italianisti alike!
