Cambridge play Oxford in a one-off fixture as part of the annual Varsity Games. The match always attracts a large number of supporters from both universities, and in 2000 produced a thrilling comeback victory for Cambridge after one of the most exciting final sets many will ever see (match report). The venue alternates between Cambridge and Oxford - this year the Light Blues have home advantage as they attempt to make it three wins in succession.
The English Volleyball Association organises this tournament, open to all British universities. The format usually involves a qualification tournament in December, and a finals tournament in February. As the Blues finished in the top eight in last year's finals, we are automatically through to the finals of this year's competition.
This is a tournament organised by the British Universities Sports Association, and involves essentially the same teams as the EVA Student Cup. The format this year is somewhat different to that of previous years. The Blues have been placed in the Midlands Conference along with five other universities (Loughborough, Nottingham, Oxford, UEA and Warwick). We play each of these teams home and away - a total of ten matches - throughout the first two terms (see the Calendar). The top four teams from this Conference will progress to the last 16 knock-out phase of the Championship.
