Getting involved...
There are lots of ways you can get involved in CUMTS productions: the only rule is that you need to be in full-time education in Cambridge, and aged seventeen or over.
Here's a little more information on ways of getting involved in shows, and the people to contact:
ACTING
Obviously, the audience sees what happens on stage, and all are welcome to audition for our shows. Auditions will be run by the Director and his/her team, and will normally involve at least one recall round as well. Many parts will obviously require you to sing and dance as well, though many shows have cameo roles for “straight” or “comedy” actors. For advice on how to prepare for an audition, or how your acting talents could be best used, please contact Flo on DELETEfhec2DELETE@cam.ac.uk
PRODUCTION TEAM
The core team behind any show consists of the Director, Musical Director, Choreographer and Producer. Roughly speaking, the director will have the artistic vision for the show, will run acting rehearsals and supervise the smooth transition of the rehearsals into a full work of theatre. The musical director will be responsible for coaching singers, teaching songs, running warm-ups, and recruiting and rehearsing a band, as well as issues like microphones. The choreographer will work closely with both the director and MD to design dances and teach them to the cast. The producer is the manager of the show’s non-artistic aspects, such as the technical personnel, publicity, accounts and general paperwork.
Part of musical theatre is what it looks like, and our productions offer a variety of opportunities for designers to get involved. Production or scenic design tend to me more concerned with the stage, properties, and so on; costume design prepares a wardrobe for the cast, often in period; lighting and sound designers work on creating a technical aesthetic for the show.
Each job requires certain skills, and there are many different ways to do each job! For more information on applying for these posts, contact Amy on DELETEalc74DELETE@cam.ac.uk
MUSICIANS
What would musicals be without their bands?! Different shows require different forces, from review shows that may just need one or two keyboards, through to jazz-style musicals with an emphasis on brass and reeds, to “rock musicals” complete with electric guitars and drums, through to vintage shows with fully orchestral line-ups of strings, winds and brass. Adverts for musicians will go out on the CUMTS, Music Faculty and ADC lists, but if you’re keen to find out more, contact the Musicians’ Rep, Chris - DELETEcn320DELETE@cam.ac.uk
TECHNICAL ROLES
These range from electricians to operators to carpenters to stage management posts, and are all vital cogs in the production machine. There are many oppurtunities to try out a technical role or shadow someone. For information on workshops, or getting involved, contact Technical Rep Peter on DELETEpah58DELETE@cam.ac.uk
