.Wednesdays 8.30-10.30pm - Conversation Evenings (in term time)

These are informal bilingual Spanish and English Conversation nights which are held in pubs and bars around Cambridge. Currently we are meeting in the Granta Lounge and then go to our FIESTA Club Night at 11PM.

Our FREE SPANISH LESSONS teacher Pedro attends to help you with your Spanish and also find out how to obtain a FREE SPANISH COURSE in SALAMANCA (Academia Isla) or AVILA (campus Universidad de Salamanca) this Summer! We will also sometimes invite Guest Speakers from the Hispanic World, like we did with our visiting friends Latin-American folk music trio "CHASKI". They are free for Members.

NB: You will need to get a special STAMPED VIP PASS ONLY FOR MEMBERS, distributed at any of our events and at Conversation Evening until 10:30PM before we head off to the club. Otherwise try to find us outside The Fez if you are a bit late. You can of course become a Member on the night, 9 Pounds for 1 year or 17 Pounds for life.

NON-MEMBERS are also welcome paying normal club entrance up to 5 Pounds, but don't have to queue if they come with our group. THINK, one club Free VIP entry+Drinks costs more than 1 YEAR MEMBERSHIP!

. Fridays late afternoon FREE SPANISH LESSONS for Members (during Full Term)

We have a highly experienced native teacher for both our Beginners and Intermediate courses. Paying non-members also welcomed. To obtain more information about our FREE SPANISH LESSONS or our FREE SPANISH COURSE in SALAMANCA (Academia Isla) or AVILA (campus Universidad de Salamanca) this Summer for Members, attend Conversation Evenings on Wednesdays. And if you wish to enrol for our FREE SPANISH LESSONS you have to:

A) Subscribe to the specialised mailing list: follow subscription instructions in this link

B) Email your details to <cuhisplessons at>, stating your Name, College or Department or Address, Contact Number and Email, plus Level of Spanish and which course you wish to attend: Beginners and Intermediate.

We will then email you through the Spanish Lessons mailing list the PROGRAMME for the Term.. One-to-one lessons at a reducecd Members rate are offered too. Lessons are FREE for Members and also open to paying non-members, tailored to your own needs, with an experienced NATIVE TEACHER.

About the teacher: I was born in Barcelona, Spain, then moved to Seville at 7. I lived in this beautiful city for many years, where I graduated in English and Spanish and qualified as a teacher in the University of Seville. I have lived in Cambridge for about four years, where have been teaching Spanish, mainly to adult students, during most of that period. I am currently teaching Spanish in adult education courses in Cambridge, also teach one-to-one lessons, as well as for the Open University. . Saturdays 7 and/or 9PM Spanish Liga Matches live on TV

ALL Spanish Liga Saturday matches are screened at Wt's either at 7 or 9PM via satellite TV. We meet there to enjoy some Hispanic Futbol and drinks, since the bottle of Spanish Cerveza (beer) SAN MIGUEL is HALF PRICE during 9/11PM! This is an EXCLUSIVE offer for our Members (NB: no other CU Society has permission to promote it).

We have an AGREEMENT at Mickey Flynn's (103 Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 2AZ ) and WT's Snooker and Sporting Clubs (by the Grafton Centre): with your CU Hispanic Society MEMBERSHIP CARD you can get FREE MEMBERSHIP and watch sports events and play snooker. They are open 24 hours (bar until 11PM) every day, except Fridays and Saturdays when it's open till 4AM!

Regular Events :

. Film Nights (in term) and Friday Films (one or two terms per academic year)

We have Film Nights throughout full term where we show films and documentaries at 8:30PM from Spain or Latin-America. In the past in Newnham College MCR, the Caius Bateman Auditorium, Wolfson Court MCR, Jesus College Party Room, Trinity College Winstanley Theatre and recently in Darwin College TV Room and the Graduate Union lounge. We will keep you posted on what's on. They are FREE for all or sometimes free for Members and costs £1 for non-members. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

During one term per academic year (usually Michaelmas, sometimes also Lent), there are screenings of Latin-American films on Fridays at 3PM, in Lecture Block Room 3, Sidgwick Site, Sidgwick Avenue. These are organised and introduced by our Senior-Treasurer Dr Geoffrey Kantaris, senior lecturer and resercher at the University. He specialises in post-dictatorship Argentine cinema, Colombian cinema, and questions of modernity and postmodernity in Latin-American urban culture. Any member of the University welcome!

. Talks, Lectures, Hispanic Reserach Seminars, Symposiums, Workshops and Festivals

These cover a wide variety of topics and themes across the whole Hispanic world. For example, one of our recent talks was "CUBA: HIP-HOP REVOLUTION?" by Geoff Baker of Royal Holloway, U. of London, which was a comprehensive multimedia experience and drew on RECORDINGS, PHOTOS and VIDEO FOOTAGE, in the Caius Bateman Auditorium.

During Term time we also promote Latin-American Lectures every Monday 5.15PM in CLAS, Seminar Room A, 1st floor, 17 Mill Lane. Hispanic Research Seminars every two weeks on Wednesdays 5:30PM, in Clare College. One day or weekend Symposiums at CRASSH, 17 Mill Lane. Film and Cultural Festivals like the recent "Contemporary Latin American Cinema Season", designed to complement the interdisciplinary symposium on "The Conundra of Vision: Reflexivity in Latin American Visual Culture", jointly organised by our Senior-Treasurer Dr Geoffrey Kantaris.

.Football/Fútbol and other Sports

Congratulations to C.A. Boca Juniors (Argentina) for their recent victory in the Recopa Sudamericana, the 18th International Cup in the club's history, again the most victorious in the world! (with AC Milan-Italy, seconds with 15 international titles are CA Independiente-Argentina and Real Madrid-Spain)
The CU Hispanic Society Mixed Fútbol/Football Team gets together now and then for a friendly game and also takes part in the Societies Tournament.
And we watch or listen most Latin American (Copa America, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Torneo Apertura/Clausura Argentino, etc.), European (European Cup, Champion's League, UEFA Cup, Liga, etc.) and International (FIFA World Cup and Youth Championships, A listed matches, etc.) tournaments and matches involving Hispanic teams.
We also play mixed Tennis, Squash, Volley and Basketball.

.Hispanic Theatre

We try to organise one performance per term or every two terms. PETER SEARLES (Honorary Member of CU Hispanic Soc) will be BACK! To perform one of the shows of his acclaimed Trilogy "HEY GRINGO!" in Gonville and Caius College, Bateman Auditorium. Watch this space for more info.

The Society also produces a magazine "LA TRANSATLANTICA", our bilingual publication is coming out soon, and WE NEED WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS!!! More information here

.Music Concerts

We have organised a unique music event that will be remembered for a long time: TANGO CONCERT of Astor PIAZZOLLA's music by "Nuestro Tiempo" quintet, led by Prof Joaquin AMENABAR! He is a world renowned professor at the Manuel de Falla Municipal Conservatory, teaches at the School of Popular Music of Avellaneda in Buenos Aires and is also director and principal bandoneon player for the "Orquesta Tipica de la Guardia Vieja".

To mention a few others: a sold-out Latin American GUITAR MUSIC CONCERT by Emile Chabal (solo guitar), taking a journey from the Cuban countryside to the Paraguayan plains, through the music of Villa-Lobos, Brouwer and Barrios; our friends the Latin-American folk music trio "CHASKI", in a FREE concert at The Fitzwilliam Museum; regularly promote every first Friday of each month the Cuban Rumba and Salsa 9-piece latin band "Lido 66"; and the impressive "Casa del Funk" when they played at the well known Jazz at John's.

Parties & Dancing:

Every Wednesday after Conversation Evening you are welcome to dance in our Hispanic/Latin "Mi Casa Tu Casa" Club Night.

Plus we organise Fiestas with music, food and drinks from the Hispanic world. Sometimes in Cambridge at Clare Hall or elsewhere. Like the legendary monthly LONDON TRIP and GRAN FIESTA (9pm/6am on board "The Yacht Club" at Temple Pier, Victoria Embankment, London) featuring: Latin/Hispanic Music in 3 DANCEFLOORS, Drinks in 3 BARS (Hispanic Beers like QUILMES, CORONA, SAN MIGUEL, also LEGUI, FERNET BRANCA, FRESSA FIZZ, ANANA FIZZ, Hispanic Wines, etc.), Hispanic FOOD available (EMPANADAS CRIOLLAS, CHORIPAN, DULCE de LECHE, sweets like TITA, RHODESIA, PALITOS de la SELVA, etc.) and a FREE PRIZE DRAW.
