Jobs
and Recruitment in
Cambridge
Introduction.
Anyone who is thinking that the only
jobs in Cambridge
were offered at the university couldn’t be more wrong. Surely the University of Cambridge is still a major employer in
the city. But in the last few years a increasing number of science, technology
and other business companies have opened offices there. Nowadays Cambridge is one of the most buoyant UK jobs
markets.
Getting a Jobs on the
public sector
You might think that a job
recruitment agency, which is specialised in management jobs and executive
recruitment might not be requested at the Cambridge University.
If you are such a person - you are wrong! Quite often seeking replacements for
even the even highest of vacant executive jobs in many UK universities;
meaning even that of Vice-Chancellor, will be placed in the hands of a
specialist executive jobs agency. The reason for this is quite simple;
high calibre universities like Cambridge
need to be sure they’re attracting the very best candidates and from a wide
field of prospective employees. Filling management jobs or executive jobs these
days isn’t anymore left to ‘the old boy network’ - but is entrusted to highly
professional executive recruitment specialists. With over 3000 non-academic
staff at Cambridge
University, there are
plenty of opportunities for executive and management jobs as well as management
consultancy ones, especially in these days of Public- Private-Partnerships.
Other significant but non-commercial employers in Cambridge, who may well
return job opportunities if you do an executive search on the internet, include
the City Council and Addenbroke’s Hospital - which employs over 6000 people.
Despite both of those organisations having large Human Resources departments of
their own, they will still consult with executive recruitment agencies for some
posts.
Getting a Job in the
private sector
In Cambridge a very high number of vacant jobs
require a graduation. Due to the its highly educated graduates, Cambridge became the
capital of job head-hunters and human resources managers. Cambridge
is, of course, the epicentre of what has become known as the ‘Silicone Fen’
because of the number of hi-tech companies located there, especially in and
around the Cambridge
Science Park,
just off the A14. Companies here include small ‘self-starting’ companies at the
cutting edge of technology through to subsidiaries of larger multi-national
corporations. The very nature of the work carried out here means they are
nearly always looking for high-calibre professionals to recruit; and having
your details recorded with the type of high quality recruitment agencies
they’ll turn to - can only help to put you at the front of any likely
candidates for jobs going in the city. Just because there are quite a lot of
management jobs and executive jobs advertised in Cambridge
doesn’t mean that the jobs market in Cambridge
is unstable. In reality Cambridge
employers are some of the most loyal in the country with many employees being
highly satisfied with their levels of job satisfaction, job security and their
working environment. Which, at a time when typically 70% of us don’t feel our
jobs are secure - can’t be a bad thing.
Cambridge – a city for students only?
Against a common opinion the
students are only a small part of Cambridge’s
population. Cambridge
has a permanent population of 130.000 people, only 18.000 of them are students.
A huge part of the population are university workers of all levels. However,
whilst most of the university workers are also resident in Cambridge, the vast majority of students
aren’t. For most students the academic year is barely more than 6 months in
total, so for a big slice of the year Cambridge
isn’t a city where you’ll feel unable to escape from students. Indeed at the
times of year when you’re most likely to take some time off work yourself -
hardly any students will be around. The converse of this is, of course, that if
you love visiting
museums and social opportunities that one of our seats of learning can
offer - working and living in Cambridge
in a management or executive job might be just the thing for you.
